MedUtopia is thrilled to introduce our readers to Dr. Stetson and welcome him to our writing team!

Dr. Geoffrey V. Stetson, better known as Geoff, originally hails from Columbus, Ohio. He did his undergrad work at Brown University, followed by medical school at the University of Chicago, and then residency training in Internal Medicine (IM) at University of California San Francisco (UCSF).

During residency, Geoff focused his efforts in Health Professions Education through an internal UCSF training program, gaining foundational understanding of adult learning theory and pedagogical approaches. He stayed on as faculty at UCSF, working clinically as a hospitalist at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

His academic pursuits originally focused on teaching with technology, specifically Massive Open Online Courses and Flipped-Classroom Blended Learning. However, he has since transitioned to focus on professional development for best teaching practices that create a safe and effective clinical learning environment. This work started as Geoff developed the teaching elective for the UCSF IM residency program that he has continued to direct for five years. Running this program, the most popular optional learning experience in the residency, has helped Geoff to hone his thoughts on evidenced-based best teaching practices. This work has led to frequent professional development presentations and workshops to trainees and faculty, and now Geoff would like to bring his ideas to share them with the Medutopia community.

Geoff has won four different teaching awards over the last five years, and in 2019 was inducted into the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators. When he is not teaching or working clinically, Geoff loves to spend time with his wife, son, and dog anywhere outside. He also likes to cook, bake, cycle, and watch college football.

Help us welcome Geoff and follow along as he brings his knowledge of clinical teaching to you! Follow him at @GStetsonMD
